“The west has become a heaven for spiritual charlatans. In the case of a scientist, you can verify who is genuine and who is not, because other scientists can check their background and test their findings. Yet in the west, without the guidelines and criteria of a thriving and full fledged wisdom culture, the authenticity of so called “masters” is almost impossible to establish. Anyone, it seems, can parade as a master and attract a following.
Recognizing who is and who is not a true master is a very subtle and demanding business; and in an age like ours, addicted to entertainment, easy answers, and quick fixes, the more sober and untheatrical attributes of spiritual mastery might very well go unnoticed. Our ideas about what holiness is, that is pious, bland, and meek, may make us blind to the dynamic and sometimes exuberantly playful manifestation of the enlightened mind.” —The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying by Sogyal Rinpoche
When inquiries were made to His Holiness Penor Rinpoche of the Palyul Nyingma Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism he reported that he had never heard of a “Tulku Tenpa.” His Holiness stated that, as the one time head of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism and current head of the Palyul Lineage, he has had extensive contact with great masters from all four schools, including Tarthang Tulku, the master Cassidy claims “recognized him” as a tulku. His Holiness reports he has never heard of a western man being recognized by Tarthang Tulku.
Senior students of Tarthang Tulku have reported that Cassidy was indeed a student but for a very short time.
Gyaltrul Rinpoche reported to us that he did not remember Cassidy even though Cassidy had claimed they were old friends and had “hung out”.
We have also observed all claims to recognition as a tulku were associated with Lamas who have passed away, with the exception of Tarthang Tulku who, as we have stated, does not remember him.
We encourage all who visit this blog to observe that this man keeps moving from project to project, group to group and specialty to specialty. He also continues to move from area to area, using various personas. He has no long-term students who follow him, relying instead on internet relationships and short-term direct contacts.
